WMP11 Not playing in Vista Beta2

Have installed Vista Beta 2 and am having a problem with playing music. Everything seems ok but no sound and the lower bar that usually moves when music is playing is stationery. It gives all the information about what is playing. I have all system sounds working. Have managed to get it to play properly two times. Have re-installed Vista three times and same problem. Any ideas what I can try? Have the SoundMax integrated sound on MSI mainboard and Vista did an update for this when installed. Regards Lynette

I have the exact issue less the progress bar issue. Unfortunately I haven't found a solution yet either. -- Jim

I had the same issues on my PC, Intel motherboard with onboard audio and also SoundMax. The other problem I had was that playing back videos there was no audio and the video would play back at 10x normal speed.
Plugged in some USB speakers and don't have these problems, so it seems like flakey audio drivers for my onboard audio.
Cheers

You are most likely correct. I uninstalled an M-Audio sound card because the chances of finding drivers was less than zero. Using onboard sound, at least I can hear sounds online. -- Jim

It's most peculiar but if I can't get it to work, sometimes, going to the sound settings first and testing the speakers and then coming back to the playlist and picking a song at random means it starts playing. Have it running now playing with no problem but if I start jumping about in the playlist or using the controls to move to the next track it will go off again. If I leave it doing it's own thing running through the playlist no problem at all! If it's the speakers setup it's a peculiar problem and I still can't understand why my progress bar doesn't move when I get no sound.

I've got a Soundmax too on my motherboard (AC1985) and I've found that if you open the media file from outside Media Player's Library view (from your music folder or through weblinks) then the files play fine. However if I select the song from the library view the sound goes and I have to restart Media Player.

Unfortunately, I cannot get it to work that way at all. It would be interesting to see if other people with the same integrated sound have the same type of problems or if it is the speakers that casue the problem although I can't really see how.

I have the same problem, but media center seems to be the source of the problem for me. I can play music in media player until I open media center. I open the properties for the sound max and click the test button and sometimes that fixes media player.
Media center is sometimes still able to play the songs. Media player will sometimes tell me another program is using the files.
I can't play DVD's using either and I have tried a number of different decoders. I can play ripped DVD's from my hard drive, but I can't selet any of the menu items, so I can't start the actual movie.
I am using powerdvd but it doesn't give me the spdif option, so all I get is a stereo signal.

Well it's definitely WMP11 that is causing the problem. I can play anything at all with iTunes, I can use the keyboard to switch, stop, pause or play songs without a single hitch, even using a wireless connection to my phillips music centre causes no problems.

Very similar situation. Intel motherboard with Soundmax integrated audio, including spdif digital out. Either Media Player or Media Center won't play music (sometimes), sometimes one won't work, but if I close and start the other, it will work. I definitely have found that testing the speaker configuration or changing it (Stereo to 5.1, 5.1 to Stereo, etc.) and THEN testing will get the sound to return. Also, if I try navigating either the Playlist in Media Center or simply skipping ahead in Media Player (or restarting a currently playing track), it may hang and no more music until I restart or reboot. I also experience the "start a track in Media Player but the progress bar won't move" and "start a track in Media Center and the elapsed timer won't count up, even though the play symbol is active (>). I have checked for Vista-compatible drivers/software from Intel and Soundmax but no go so far. Operation is hit-and-miss. Have any of you reported this in bug reports? Thanks Rick
